Colin Powell was the US secretary of state in 2001. He then made a case before the United Nations for military action against Iraq, claiming that Saddam Hussein was building weapons of mass destruction. The United States and its allies waged war, an Iraqi court-ordered hangman killed Saddam, but the coalition forces found no such weapons. Powel left the Republican party after the Jan. 6, 2021 assault on the Capitol.
